Dr. Pei-Shiun Chang is currently on the faculty of the Indiana University School of Nursing in Bloomington. She is a certified acute care nurse practitioner. Her teaching responsibilities include health assessment, and pathophysiology and pharmacology for nursing in the undergraduate program.
While working as a nurse on a cardiovascular surgical unit, Dr. Chang became interested in promoting physical and psychological health in older adults with cardiovascular disease. For her doctoral dissertation, she designed an intervention study to test the effects of Qigong exercise on the physical and psychological health of community-dwelling older adults and to explore the feasibility and acceptability of American older adults engaging in a Qigong exercise program. Study participants were impressed by how physically acceptable and emotionally joyful Qigong exercise was. The overall results show the promising and potential applications of Qigong exercise in older adults with chronic illness.
Dr. Chang’s next step in research is to use her research findings to design future studies to evaluate the effects of Qigong exercise on health, quality of life, physical and psychological health promotion, and biomarkers related to cardiac fitness in older adults with cardiovascular disease. She recently received a research grant from STTI Alpha Chapter to conduct a pilot study to explore the preliminary effects, feasibility, and acceptability of Qigong exercise in African-American adults aged 45-85 years, and to test the newly developed intervention fidelity checklist specifically for Qigong intervention.
Dr. Chang is active in the American Heart Association, the Midwest Nursing Research Society, and the Sigma Theta Tau—Alpha Chapter. She was elected campus counselor of the STTI Alpha Chapter until 2019 and has been elected to serve on the CLCD/CVSN Older Populations Committee through 2020. Dr. Chang wishes to bring her cultural perspectives to her teaching, research, and service.
