The Pulse of IU Nursing

From the Interim Dean
Janet S. Carpenter, PhD, RN, FAANThe Power of Leadership in Nursing
Leadership is more than a title. Leadership is the courage to step forward, the wisdom to listen, and the vision to inspire others to grow. It happens every day, in every setting where nurses care, teach, and advocate.
At the IU School of Nursing, we view leadership not as a role reserved for a select few, but as a responsibility we all share, whether we are students, faculty, alumni, or partners.
Our fall issue is dedicated to leadership in action as we explore how three valued members of our community embody what it means to lead. As you read their stories, I hope you feel as inspired as I do by the way they are stepping forward to not only meet today’s challenges, but to also create a better future for us all.

Guiding a 24/7 Team with Purpose
Amy Little, DNP, RN, doesn't have a "typical day," but there is a constant. By the time many people are pouring their first cup of coffee, Little—IU Health Bedford's chief nursing officer—has already reviewed the day's most pressing issues and set the tone for her leadership team.

From Tribute to Legacy
Sonna Merk, PhD, RN, and three-time graduate of the IU School of Nursing, gave her first significant gift to the school after a simple request to honor a nursing leader. That first simple request has blossomed into a lasting legacy of philanthropy supporting a cause that's close to her heart.
